The Story Behind the Killing of United Healthcare’s CEO
Unmasking our Health Insurance

The “Why” Behind the Killing

A number of years ago my wife Sandy needed lifesaving healthcare that her doctor pleaded with our healthcare insurance company to provide and cover. However, the insurer flatly refused. In fact, the insurer went so far as to claim our doctor had never prescribed the care the insurer was denying. I remember it as a truly Alice in Wonderland moment in my life. I would have our doctor on the phone explaining why she was at her wits-end because of our insurance company was refusing to accept the care she was prescribing for Sandy. Only to have our insurer tell me our doctor had never called and was, in fact, in full agreement with what the insurer had decided was the appropriate care and coverage for Sandy.

To put the quandary that this back and forth between our doctor and the insurance company created for me in perspective, I need to explain that I was a New Business Manager for DuPont and was accustomed to negotiating arrangements between DuPont and any number of outside companies and business interests. However, while my DuPont negotiations always involved resolving some form difference, there was always an underlying need for honesty.

Our insurer had no such need for such honesty. They repeatedly claimed to have spoken with our doctor and been assured the doctor agreed with the insurer’s decision on the care and coverage Sandy needed. However, I had personally met with the doctor and witnessed the tears in her eyes as she explained that there was nothing more she could do to get the care Sandy needed.

However, those who know me well will understand that this was just the beginning of my dispute with our insurance company. I began by accepting that we had insurance, right, so why not treat it like any other form of insurance and simply forego the coverage and personally pay for the care Sandy needed. So that’s what I did. I cut the gordian-knot our insurer was creating and took them out of the game. Or, at least I thought I had.

Imagine my surprise when the hospital said they couldn’t accept my offer to pay for Sandy’s care. I went nuts. How could a hospital refuse my offer to pay for the care Sandy’s doctor was prescribing as lifesaving healthcare?

What followed, which included three other hospitals refusing my offer to pay for the care Sandy needed, was: #1.) Sandy died untreated, #2.) I learned why our insurer was so confident that they could ignore my wife’s doctor, and #3.) I discovered how our insurer was able to block my offer to pay for the care Sandy needed, and then walk away free and clear.

Yes, I would sue our insurer over eight long years and through three separate courts. It was an excruciatingly painful experience where our insurer, time and again, proved the case to them was little more than something akin to swatting flies at a summer picnic. Because, nothing that I believed going into the suit proved to be true, and our insurer had the power to literally change the facts of the case. All the records on my wife’s care disappeared, the hospital’s memory of events changed to fit the position of the insurer, and our doctor was forced to explain that she would be risking her entire career if she supported me in court.

However, there was one very big win for me and hopefully everyone who reads my posts, along with my new book, “The Big Lie in My Healthcare Bill.” Yes, Sandy’s insurer won the 8-year legal battle. But, I won the 8-year information war. Because, when all the legal briefs and replies were no more than trash, and the final gavel had come down on my efforts to hold our healthcare insurance company accountable, I walked away having studied the insurer’s secret documents that only survive through secrecy.

So please, let me share with you what I learned as a result of those eight long years in court. Let me help you understand the rules of the game that your insurance company is playing to overrule your doctor and bill you as much as possible in direct violation of their own contracts. Let me help you understand how you can turn the game on its head, and make the healthcare system work for you instead of the healthcare insurance industry and their corral of in-network providers. Let me help you
win every time when it comes to the care you need and the coverage you’re owed.

And lastly, let me help you understand the far bigger story behind the shooting of United Healthcare’s CEO and the public rage that followed it. Because, while the rage may be understandable, it won’t solve our healthcare problem and it certainly won’t solve yours. So please, please, let me help you and the country get to a position where the healthcare insurance industry can’t decide the level of healthcare we have to accept, and the financial destruction that so often comes with it.
